Business Owner & Freedom Fighter in one

It is time to begin looking closer into a part of our economy and our society that has been forgotten and rarely highlighted for too long. For the past 18 months Iwe at AMC have been involved in the birthing of a new non-profit organization. It wasn't a smooth path, step by step, everything happening as one would hope or expect. It was more an on again - off again engagement.

Last week we accepted a driving role in the new organization to help it collect funds utilizing modern methods as well as delivering the help it intents to provide to the business community. The full name of the organization is: "Citizen Soldier Business Recovery Foundation", or CSBRF. The mission of the foundation is to help business owners in their time of need. These are not just any regular business owners who might have made a bad financial decision or failed in leading their company. These are....

Individuals who are Business Owners and Freedom Fighters in one person. How do you get to be these two things in one person, you ask? Well, first of all our hope is that we all agree that anybody serving in our military is fighting to protect and defend the freedoms we all enjoy every day. That makes all men and women in military uniform freedom fighters.

Some of them, actually about 55000, have served in the military on active duty for many years. When they retired or completed their commitment, they decided to remain available to serve our country. They signed up for the Reserves or National Guard. Up until 4 years ago, the current generation of these individuals could expect to train about 1 weekend per month and be ready to help when disasters strike, natural catastrophes require support, or in limited support roles for the military.

With the advent of the wars in Afghanistan and Iraq that situation changed dramatically. As more and more active duty units were send to these wars, it became clear that the rotations could only be maintained when reserve and guard units would also get involved. The required directives were crafted and Defense Secretary Donald Rumsfeld began to activate these units for combat duty.

Can you imagine going from being called a weekend warrior to being in the middle of a nasty war? Now, try to imagine you have served your duty in the military, signed up for the National Guard or Reserves, and began to develop your own business. After a few years you have employees, you have revenues and profits, you have products and services, and you have people who depend on your leadership.

Suddenly you receive a call, or letter, or both telling you to get ready for activation of your reserve or guard unit. You will go to a training camp immediately followed by deployment to Afghanistan or Iraq. For 9-15 months you will be away from home, away from your family, and away from your company.

That's when you realize that you are a Business Owner and Freedom Fighter all in one person. The CSBRF foundation is using its funds to support the companies of these heroes. Dedicated consultants are dispatched to the companies of the citizen soldier business owners to help their organizations survive while they serve and protect the freedoms we all enjoy.

By helping these leaders keep their businesses alive, the foundation supports the local economy and maintains employment for those individuals working in these companies. All the support services of the foundation occur without cost to the citizen soldiers on deployment, or the company. The support can extent to post-deployment times as well, in case certain initiatives need to be completed.

If you are gone from your own company for a year, it takes a little time to get back on track, get everything back under your control while you are trying to cope with all the impressions and burdens that you were exposed to while fighting a war.

Regardless of political views about the current wars, it should be clear that these citizen soldier business owners deserve our support to keep their companies afloat, especially in these trying economic times.

We are working on creating an easy, online way to give donations to the CSBR Foundation, so the team at AMC can help the companies and the Business Owner Freedom Fighters survive.

Their Role in Media Planning

Media planning and buying is an important marketing function. Companies need to use the right medium while targeting their audience. help organisations to use the right medium and measure the performance of the marketing activity. Media planning essentially answers these fundamental questions:

Media planning helps in answering these basic questions:

a. Where to advertise? Market research helps in identifying which market their competitors are using. Either using primary or secondary data, the target market segmentation is done. Which part of the country would it be more successful and the medium that part uses.

b. Who to advertise for? The companys potential buyer needs to be identified, the person earning the most in the family might buy the product, but it could be used by some other individual in the same household. Research again helps in targeting these products accurately.

c. How much to advertise? The media budget is based on this, the more frequently the advertisement is shown or viewed or aired the costlier it is the purchase the medium for the given time and space. Specifying the time is a must when the ad campaign is on a television or a radio.

Some companies prefer in-house planners, business management consultants usually have a team of individuals, who are selected based on the client. Business management consultants can make his/her group according to the project or client they have. Certain brands invest highly in media planning and at times some dont, depending on this a team can be formed.

What is media planning?

Media planning is a highly specialised service; the planner needs to have a thorough understanding of consumer behaviour, purchasing habits of various brands and the medium of communication which is popular with their consumers. Based on these factors the consultant chooses the right medium or media, depending on how much the client is willing to spend. Media planning is a function that helps in determining the most effective manner of spending the advertisers money/ investment across media so as to generate the best Return of Investment (ROI) for the company.

The consultant needs to understand that mediums of communication are now merging, previously each medium print, radio and television were being targeted separately. Now with the online medium the three traditional mediums have converted into one. Marketing is now a two way communication, consumers and brand interact using social media.

The major steps involved in media planning are:

Clients Marketing Brief: This brief is provided by the client, it contains details about the product, its functions and the competitive advantage and the portfolio of products and services they offer. High and low selling products are highlighted, this help in the SWOT analysis. The media that they are currently using, the market segments that they are targeting and how much they are currently spending on media. The client specifies their marketing objectives in this brief.

Advertising Agency brief: This brief explains the creative execution of the campaign; this is usually done by a boutique or an agency that handles creative advertising designs.

Media Planning brief: The advertising agency comes up with the advertising brief the media planner or business management consultant helps to arrive at a media plan. The media brief contains media objectives; this helps in deciding which media to choose, how many times and at when. The brief includes definition of target segment and information about their competitors. Understanding how much their competitors are spending, the medium they are using and how many times in a day or month are they disseminating the advertisement.

Media planning is an important management function and business management consultants help in creating the media planning brief. At times companies use to wrong medium to disseminate their marketing efforts, business management consultant help in choosing the right medium in the current market scenario.

Business Battlefield Analogy

Business Battlefield Analogy

Business Battlefield Analogy

What are the obstacles that stand between you and maximum profitability? What issues and activities detract and distract from the realization of your goals? Every business has to deal with matters that consume time and resources but add little to no value to the primary business pursuit. Sometimes these things are of an urgent nature; they require a quick and thorough response. However, the outcome offers no contribution to the over-all work effort of the business.

What is your company Mission Statement? Are you maintaining a proper focus on your high payoff activities (HPA's), or are you losing your own internal culture war giving up more ground each day by accepting new norms of frustration? At Build A Business we specialize in helping you to stay on mission. We are consistently asked as to why we are so confident that our military training and experiences can be applied to non-military challenges and situations. We have developed this Business Battlefield analogy to help our clients, and future clients, best understand our approach. The Business Battlefield's concepts are best demonstrated with the following scenario: Imagine that you are leading a military motorized team of 150 personnel along with the necessary vehicles and equipment. You have been assigned the critical mission to secure a strategic bridge located 94 miles away from your present position. You are to take this bridge from the enemy and establish control over who has access to its usage.

The obvious first step for you is to form a prudent plan with the most likelihood of success. You will need to choose a route and plot this on your map. In doing so, you must consider factors outside of your control such as the weather, the terrain, and any available intelligence concerning enemy forces in the area. You will also need to factor in the abilities and limitations of your resources including the condition and capability of your vehicles, supplies, and, particularly important, your team.

Your plan should also take into account the country, culture and political climate in which this mission takes place because this knowledge may serve you well as your team encounters both civilians and enemy units.

You are not the only friendly operating in this area, so you will need to know the adjacent units and their missions and ensure positive communications are established and maintained.

As with any operation time is always a factor and your resources are limited, so every action and decision must be effective toward accomplishing the mission. Oh, and let's not forget, failure is not an option! Let me step out of our scenario for a moment to make the comparison to your situation. Your organization is on a mission. You must devise a plan taking into account factors outside your control: the economy; industry & government regulations; clients' decisions; vendor actions; and the list goes on. There are also competitors out there trying to thwart your efforts, albeit they are not actually trying to physically kill you, we hope! You must consider the capabilities and limitations of your team you have assembled and developed, and the equipment available as well. You must communicate with others like your clients, vendors, advocates, and regulatory entities at various times and for various reasons.

Cash flow and time are always important, so every action and decision must be effective toward accomplishing your mission. And although failures on the Business Battlefield do not typically end in loss of life, failure is still not an option! The similarities between the military battlefield and the Business Battlefield are many as we demonstrated above. There is another aspect of military operations that we can draw comparisons to your situation. They are the fire-fights with which we become engaged, and they usually occur at the worst possible times. Let's resume our scenario...

Your enemy is present and active in the region. You have a high probability for engaging in battle. You also now have a detailed plan in mind. During the planning phase of your operation you were able to identify specific situations that will affect your mission. Understanding that communication is vital, you have incorporated ideas and information gathered from your team, and you have extensively planned and communicated your primary strategy, as well as contingency plans. In doing so, your unit has strengthened as a team, and you deem the operation ready to proceed - It's a Go.

Approximately one hour into the execution phase your team begins taking heavy fire from enemy forces. The threat is real; the bullets are flying by your head. No plan could incorporate the specifics of this event - the exact positions of you and your enemy, the size of the force you've encountered, the weapons used against you, the coming rain, and so on. Nevertheless, you are now in a firefight, and it has to be dealt with. You take cover, assess the situation and respond. The fighting takes longer than you anticipated. Your team incurs damages and losses, but your skills and resources serve you well, and the enemy retreats. You need to recognize that the danger at this point may well lie within you. Your natural desire may be to give chase, to pursue the enemy and destroy them. This pursuit would likely be a tremendous waste of time and resources. This pursuit would not bring your team any closer to the bridge, and would distract you from your primary mission. It can be hard to maintain the proper mission perspective during and after a firefight. Some firefights are unavoidable, but you must always realize that the decisions you make in a firefight are firefight focused. The adrenaline rush, the reality of close-call threats and even anger can be misleading. Your senses may be affected: your sight limited by the smoke, your ears dulled by repeated percussions. This is when leadership, informed by a broader perspective and guided by sound principles is needed most. You receive a call from your commanding officer: "What's your status? How far are you from the bridge?" This officer commends your good work and handles the specifics of your re-supply needs. Most importantly, he gives you a much needed prompt. He reminds you of your marching orders and refocuses you on your mission. This is the value of remaining open to leadership from outside the firefight. From his perspective, the commanding officer can see what you don't.

In your business you may be the leader of the team dealing with quick-paced variables on the ground and constant firefights, or you may be the commanding officer who guides the broader effort. Whatever your role, the development of your leadership skills is important to winning the battle.

Build Muscle Mass - 3 Key Ingredients to Building Lean Muscle Mass Quickly.

If youre anything like I was a short while ago, a skinny guy trying to build muscle mass, then I have some important tips that could help you start seeing results instantly.

There are 3 key ingredients that you MUST HAVE in order to build muscle mass and quickly at that. And here they are:

Muscle Mass Ingredient #1 More Protein

If you want to build muscle mass quickly then this is a must. Just remember, the only thing that can build muscle in your body is Protein. So if youre not consuming enough protein its IMPOSSIBLE to build lean muscle mass and stack on the pounds.

In order to maintain your weight, you should be consuming 1 gram of protein for each pound of body weight. So if youre a 150 lb. guy then in order to maintain your muscle mass at that weight you need to consume 150 grams of protein each day. And if you want to build muscle mass, youre going to have to consume more protein, to not only maintain the muscles you have now but to build more.

So if you want to build muscle mass quickly and safely a general rule of thumb is to consume 1 2 grams of protein for each pound of body weight. So if youre a 150lb. guy youd want to consume at least 150 grams of protein upward to 300 grams of protein a day.

Muscle Mass Ingredient #2 More Carbs

Despite what Dr. Atkins said, for all us skinny guys Carbs are GOOD. We need carbs as a source of energy. But you dont want to consume just any ol carbs. You want to consume a lot of complex carbs rather than simple carbs.

In other words, you still want to stay away from the sweets and simple sugars that are found in a lot of our junk food, and you want to consume more complex carbs like those found in whole wheat bread, brown rice, sweet potatoes, whole grain cereals, yams, spinach etc.

Why complex carbs? Because unlike simple carbs (sugars) its virtually impossible to turn complex carbs into fat which means more energy to burn (work out with) and less fat to deal with in the end.

If you want to build muscle mass fast, ideally youd want to consume 2 3 grams of carbs for each pound of bodyweight a day.

Muscle Mass Ingredient #3 Heavy Weight Training

You cannot build muscle mass without Heavy weight training. Lets just put it this way the more stress (heavy weight) you put on your muscles, the more it will grow. And its simply because when you put extreme stress on your muscle by lifting heavy weights, your body responds (builds more muscle) so that next time it wont be as hard or strenuous on your body to lift the same weight.

Ideally, if you want to build muscle mass - lean muscle mass to be more specific, youd want to lift weights that allow you to do 6-8 reps and no more.

Of course theres a whole lot more to building muscle mass, but if you follow these 3 key ingredients youll be on the road to building lean muscle mass quickly and a whole lot easier than you ever thought possible. Good luck and grow Massive.

Breastfeeding Special Babies In Special Circumstances - Article One

Breastfeeding is even more important for babies with special needs and their parents. Breastfeeding gives you a higher level of maternal hormones, which increase your intuition and perseverance to meet the needs of your special baby. Because of its physical, psychological, and medical benefits, breastfeeding is even more important for these babies. A baby has special needs. Parents develop a style of caring for their baby and in so doing elevate their level of intuition and sensitivity toward their baby to match the level of baby's needs. Let's discuss the most common situations in which babies with needs in unique situations bring out a special kind of parenting.

The Cesarean-Birthed Baby

Following a surgical birth a breastfeeding mother has double job: healing herself and nurturing her baby. Here's how to do both:

* Ask the lactation consultant in the maternity unit to show you the side-lying position and the clutch hold for breastfeeding. These positions keep baby's weight off your incision.

* If you would rather sit up to nurse your baby, sit in a straight-backed armchair rather than in your hospital bed. This is easier on your abdominal muscles. Use pillows along your side to bring baby up to breast height and to protect your incision.

* Be sure that dad observes how the professionals help you position yourself and your baby for comfort and for correct breastfeeding technique so that he can take over this role when you go home. Ask hem to instruct dad on holding baby's lower jaw down and everting baby's lip outward, since it may be uncomfortable for you to bend over to see how baby is latching on.

* Take whatever pain medications you need to be comfortable. Pain suppresses milk production and interferes with your milk-ejection reflex. The usual medications used for post-op pain are safe, since very little goes into your milk.

* If post-operative complications prevent breastfeeding for a day or two, father or a nurse can give formula, but preferably not by bottle. Cup feeding or finger feeding with a syringe or a supplementor is better than using a bottle, which may lead to nipple confusion.

* Breastfeed your baby frequently, night and day. Studies have shown that it may take longer for a mother's milk to come in after a cesarean birth. Frequent feeding will build up your milk supply more quickly. If baby is not breastfeeding yet, you need to begin pumping your breasts as soon as possible so that your baby can benefit from your colostrum produced during this time, and so you will have an ample milk supply when baby does start breastfeeding.

* Baby should room-in with you as soon as possible. Because of post-operative sedation this is usually discouraged for cesarean mothers. It is still advised to room-in if someone can stay with you to help care for the baby.

Be patient. It takes more time, support, and perseverance to achieve a successful breastfeeding relationship following an operation. Some of the energy that would otherwise go toward breastfeeding is shared with healing your own body. Breastfeeding harmony will come, though not as easily or quickly.

The Premature Baby

These special babies have special needs for extra nutrition and comfort. Here is where the breastfeeding mother shines. The recent advances of newborn intensive care have increased the chances of taking home a healthy baby, but the same technology that is saving more babies has, by its very definition, displaced the mother. But you are an indispensable part of the medical team.

Supermilk!

A premature baby has an even greater need for mother's milk. Premature babies need more proteins and calories for catch-up growth. Researchers have discovered that the milk of mothers who deliver preterm babies is higher in proteins and calories -- a vivid testimony to how the milk of a species changes to ensure the survival of the young of that species. Supermilk for early babies -- how exciting!

While the nutritional benefits of breastfeeding are important for premature babies, the immunological benefits are even more critical. Breast milk protects these babies against bacteria and viruses that their own immune systems cannot cope with. In addition, human milk is the perfect first feeding for immature gastrointestinal tracts. Human milk offers protection against necrotizing enterocolities, a life-threatening bowel disease that affects premature babies. Your baby's neonatologist may order that baby's diet of human milk be fortified or supplemented with a commercial product. This is because in order to grow as they did in the womb, very young preemies may need larger amounts of some nutrients than mother's milk can provide. But this does not mean that mother's milk should not be used also. Human milk provides premature babies with important health and developmental benefits unavailable in commercial formulas and fortifiers.

It used to be the policy in most newborn intensive care units not to let premature babies breastfeed until after baby was able to tolerate bottle feedings. Research has shown that premature babies actually do better with breastfeeding than bottle feeding, and that the ability to breastfeed precedes the ability to bottle feed. Researchers found that a breastfeeding baby sucks and swallows in a burst-and-pause rhythm that uses less energy than the less rhythmic bottle feeding. The found that breastfeeding babies actually grew better and had fewer stop-breathing episodes and tired less during breastfeeding than with bottle feeding. Not only is breast milk superior for premature babies, so is the way it is delivered.

What Mother Can Do

To understand your important role in the care of your premature infant, let's go through the usual case of the premature baby whose breathing is stable but who is in the intensive care unit for "growing." Here are some care-by-mother steps to consider.

Practice kangaroo care

One way that a breastfeeding mother can join the medical team is through an innovation called kangaroo care -- an affectionate nickname derived from the method's similarity to the kangaroo pouch and the easy self-feeding of the premature baby kangaroo. Research by Dr. Gene Cranston Anderson at Case Western Reserve in Cleveland has shown that preemies receiving kangaroo care gain weight faster, have fewer stop-breathing episodes, and experience a shorter hospital stay.

Using a baby sling, mother wears her diaper-clad baby skin to skin on or between her breasts The combination of mother's warm body, warm blankets, and mother's clothing keeps the premature baby toasty. Many premature babies initially react to this comfortable environment by falling asleep and sleeping more peacefully tan in their high-tech cribs. When baby awakens, the closeness to mother's breasts stimulates baby to feed as his little stomach requires -- a system called self-regulatory feeding. Live at the side of your bay's incubator and sit in a rocking chair with baby wrapped skin to skin at your breasts. Unless your baby must be attached to medical instruments, walk around while wearing your baby. Even more than rocking in the chair, the rhythm of walking helps baby breathe more regularly because, presumably, this is a pattern he had been used to in your womb. Kangaroo-cared-for babies cry less. Because it wastes oxygen and energy, excessive crying can keep premature babies from growing optimally. Breastfeeding, kangaroo care, holing and rocking, and wearing your baby lessen crying and speed growth.

Besides being good for babies, there is something in kangaroo care for mothers, too. The closeness of baby nestling on the breasts triggers the mothering and milk-producing hormones. Mothers who are invited to participate in kangaroo care are more inclined to breastfeed, produce more milk, and breastfeed longer. They develop a deeper attachment to their infants, feel more confident about their mothering skills, and feel a valuable part of the newborn intensive care team.

Newborn specialists believe that one main reason kangaroo care helps premature babies thrive is that mother acts as a breathing pacemaker for her premature infant. Preterm babies have frequent stop-breathing episodes, called apnea, which contribute to these babies' slow growth and even slower departure from the hospital. You probably never thought of yourself as a breathing machine, but picture this: Baby is snuggled comfortably against your chest, his ear over your heart. You have a rhythm in your breathing and your heart rate, and your baby senses it. The rhythm of your breathing, your heartbeat, your voice, which baby was accustomed to hearing in utero, and even the warm air flowing from your nose onto baby's scalp at each breath are translated into breathing stimuli for your baby, as if reminding the forgetful premature to breathe. Attached babies catch the rhythm of their parents.

Pump your milk

Rent an electric breast pump and start pumping your milk as soon as possible after birth. Store this milk and begin giving your baby your milk as soon as baby is medically able to take it by whatever method works best.

Ask for help

Seek assistance from a lactation consultant who will show you special techniques to help your premature baby latch on correctly and suck efficiently.

Avoid the bottle

Ask the nursing staff to feed your baby with a cup, syringe, or a finger-feeding system (as discussed in my article, "Breastfeeding Helpers.") instead of with bottles and artificial nipples. Another alternative is to continue tube feeding while your baby learns to nurse at the breast. Some premature babies do not experience nipple confusion and eagerly advance from bottle to breast. Otherwise are prone to nipple confusion, so avoid the bottle stage unless medically necessary. When you take your baby home from the hospital you may need to continue to offer supplements for a week or two.

Ease baby on

Instead of pulling your baby in very close with a rapid movement, as you would to latch a term baby onto your breast, it's better to ease the breasts into the premature baby's mouth. Use the compress-and-stuff technique. With your hand shaped like a C (thumb on top and fingers beneath the breast), cup your breast well behind the areola. Compress the breast, tease baby's mouth open wide, and gradually ease the "areola sandwich" into baby's mouth.

Forget the clock

The concept of schedule has little meaning for term babies and none for premature. Expect your baby to suck weakly, feed slowly, tire quickly, and fall asleep frequently during the feedings. (They do this with bottle feeding, too.) Preterm babies tire more easily, need more calories for catch-up growth, and have small tummies. This is why they need small, frequent feedings. Premature babies have more bizarre sleep-and-wake cycles, so that every mother-baby pair must work out a feeding pattern that gets the most milk into the baby without tiring him out.

No More, Please, I'm Tired!

It is important not to jostle and tire premature babies, and others with medical problems, by becoming too enthusiastic and vigorous with feedings, lest babies burn more energy than they take in during feeding and consequently grow too slowly. Watch for cues (flutter-type sucking and drifting off to sleep) that baby has had enough. Ease baby off your breast, but be ready to feed again in a couple of hours, or even sooner.

The Ill or Hospitalized Baby

Breastfeeding is good medicine. Besides helping preemies thrive, the breastfeeding mother is a valuable part of the medical team if her baby is ill, particularly if he is hospitalized. When a baby is in the hospital, it is a good practice to encourage care by parents. It seems babies get better more quickly, and parents feel involved as part of the team. The more involved they are, the better they understand the nature of the illness and the methods of treatment.

Breastfeeding is particularly valuable to infants who are hospitalized for breathing problems such as croup or bronchitis. In these conditions, the more upset baby is, the more the breathing is upset. Relaxing baby also helps relax the breathing. Here is a story of a one-year-old boy and his breastfeeding mother. Early one morning the baby awakened barking like a seal and having difficulty breathing. The baby was hospitalized for treatment of croup, but his condition worsened. The baby was in a vicious cycle--the more difficulty he had breathing, the more anxious he got, which further aggravated his breathing. The mother was told that unless the baby relaxed, his condition would deteriorate, and we would have to do a tracheotomy (surgically open his windpipe below the inflamed vocal cords so that he could breathe more air). Without taking a breath the mother volunteered, "I'll relax him" and she did! Through the opening in the baby's oxygen tent came the mother's breast, along with soothing words of encouragement and a familiar touch from someone who cared enough to give her child the very best. The baby listened, looked, and sucked. Immediately he relaxed and breathed better. The Doctor relaxed, mother relaxed, and so did the surgeon, waiting with his lifesaving instruments. The baby got the ultimate pacifier.

During and illness babies often regress to a more primitive and familiar pattern of self-comforting, such as thumb-sucking and curling up like a fetus. Being breastfed while sick lessens the anxiety of being in the hospital by helping the infant latch on to a comfortable and pleasurable pattern that he has learned to love and trust.

Breastfeeding is also valuable for the infant who has a diarrheal illness from inflamed intestine (called gastroenteritis). These infants may not tolerate commercially prepared formula, but they generally can tolerate breast milk. It has been shown that many infants with gastroenteritis continue to breastfeed without aggravating the diarrhea or getting dehydrated; whereas their formal-feeding friends with the same illness often wind up in the hospital with dehydration and need intravenous feedings. Chalk up another bonus for mother's milk. And the very act of sucking is very comforting to a baby who doesn't understand why she feels so crummy.

Breastfeeding Helps Hearts

Babies are born with heart defects (called congenital heart disease, or CHD) have one of two problems: They may have too much blood flowing to their lungs, causing overload on the heart and resulting in heart failure. Or they may not have enough blood flowing to their lungs, resulting in cyanosis (blueness); a baby with this condition is termed a "blue baby." In both of these conditions babies with CHD tire easily during feedings and grow more slowly. Years ago, breastfeeding a baby with CHD was discouraged because it was erroneously thought that breastfeeding would tire these babies out. As was discussed for premature babies, research has shown the opposite. These babies may actually use less energy and breathe more efficiently during breastfeeding than bottle feeding. Breast milk contains less salt than formula, so it is better for babies who are prone to heart failure. The same suggestions recommended for feeding premature babies apply to feeding babies with CHD; small, frequent feedings, often with a supplementer system, and large doses of patience.

There will be more articles on breastfeeding, raising baby and other related topics so be sure to keep an eye out for my articles.

Breast Pump Glossary and Breastfeeding Terms

2-PHASE EXPRESSION
A feature on some breast pumps by Medela (Symphony, Pump In Style Advanced-- not Original-- and the new Swing), that starts the cycling fast with less suction then after two minutes switches to slower cycling with more vacuum strength to imitate the sucking patterns of infants. A special let-down button can be pressed once to go instantly to the second mode. The manual breast pump Harmony is also said to have 2-phase. The first phase is initiated by squeezing the short part of the handle, with the longer, stronger strokes of the second phase coming from switching the hand around to squeeze the long part of the handle.

AREOLA
The dark circular area around the nipple. It is important during breast feeding for the baby to latch on with as much areola in his or her mouth as possible.

BABY SCALE
For mothers concerned about low milk supply a baby scale is a tool to verify baby's weight gain and also the amount of breast milk received in any given nursing. By weighing the baby before and after nursing and doing a little subtraction, one can determine the number of ounces the baby nursed from the breast. Since a nursing baby is usually more efficient than any breast pump, this method is preferred to breast pumping for determining how much milk the baby may be getting. For these purposes a baby scale accurate to 15 grams or less may be rented from many breast pump rental stations.

BATTERY PACK, BATTERIES
In a breast pump, batteries give cordless convenience but vacuum strength and cycles per minute may be less than the user will find when using the AC adapter. Also pump cycling may slow as the batteries wear down. Slower cycles may cause some discomfort because the vacuum will be held longer on the breast. If this happens, reduce the vacuum and replace the batteries with fresh ones as soon as possible.

BREAST PADS
Absorbent material of cloth of paper inserted in the bra between nursings to absorb milk leaks. They may be disposable or washable, but a healthy pad should allow for good airflow to the nipple. Plastic liners are discouraged or only for occasional use.

BREAST PUMP
A device that expresses milk from the breast. A misconception is that the breast pump suctions milk out of the breast. A breast pump's job is to trigger the milk-ejection response or let-down. Most pumps achieve this goal by using suction to pull the nipple into the tunnel of the breast shield or flange then release, which counts as one cycle. Thirty to sixty cycles per minute can be expected with better quality electric breast pumps. It is important to note that in most cases the breast pump is not as efficient at removing milk from the breast as the nursing baby. Many mothers find their milk supply dwindling when they substitute too many pumpings for actual nursing sessions with their baby.

BREAST PUMP REVIEWS
Opinions by actual users of the breast pumps. Two good places to find some reviews on the internet are Amazon and Epinions.

BREAST SHELLS
Rounded pieces of plastic worn inside the bra. Shells come with two types of backs; the one with the larger hole is meant for treatment of sore nipples. The back with the small hole, which fits close to the nipple base, is meant for treating inverted nipples.

BREAST SHIELDS, FLANGES, FUNNELS
The part of the breast pump that actually touches the breast, covering the nipple and areola area. Medela breast shields fit almost all their pumps and come in sizes 21 mm, 23 mm, 27 mm, 30 mm, 36 mm, and 40 mm. Ameda uses different combinations of flanges and inserts to accommodate nipples in sizes 21 mm, 23 mm, 25 mm, 28.5 mm, 30.5 mm to fit all of their pumps but the Nurture III. See also SOFTFIT, FLEXISHIELD and LET-DOWN MASSAGE CUSHIONS.

CLOSED SYSTEM
Breast pumps designed for multiple users, such as hospital grade rental pumps. There is no possibility of breast milk entering the pump motor. Although the Avent Isis IQ breast pumps are said to be closed system, Avent still recommends their pumps to be single user.

COLOSTRUM
The substance produced in the breasts during the final weeks of pregnancy. This "first milk" is highly concentrated in nutrition ideal for the newborn. It has been likened to an "antibodies cocktail." Colostrum has a laxative effect on the baby, helping him pass his early stools, which aids in the excretion of excess bilirubin and helps prevent jaundice. With frequent nursings of 10 to 12 times a day, a mother's regular breast milk will begin to appear or "come in" around day 3 or 4 after birth.

CYCLING
The suck and release pattern created by a breast pump to simulate what a nursing baby does.

CPM
cycles per minute. See CYCLING.

DOUBLE PUMPING
Pumping both breasts simultaneously. Research with pre-term infants has shown double pumping can increase a mother's milk supply, reduce expression time (yes, even cutting times in half) and produce higher levels of prolactin, the hormone that stimulates milk production after birth.

ENGORGEMENT
Any time an insufficient amount of milk has been removed from the lactating breast it may cause this painful condition. The engorgement that occurs when a mother's milk first "comes in" is a little less understood, since swelling of the breast tissues themselves can be a contributing factor. There are many treatments, one of which is to use a breast pump briefly to soften the areola area so that the baby will be able to latch on easier.

FUNNEL COVERS
The lid-like covers that snap over the funnel or breast shield of an Avent breast pump. The advantage of a cover is to keep the insides of the funnel and milk container clean and in ready-to-use condition.

FLEXISHIELD AREOLA MASSAGER
A breast shield accessory that can be purchased separately and used with Ameda breast pumps. The Flexishield is designed to compress the areola area, helping to stimulate a let-down reflex. It is especially useful for smaller-breasted women who may benefit from the added stimulation.

HOSPITAL GRADE BREAST PUMPS
This group of pumps have a stronger vacuum strength than any other breast pumps and are the most suited to establishing and maintaining a milk supply in a mother who will not be breastfeeding her infant for long periods, as in the situation of a premature or sick infant.

HYGIENIKIT
Included with every Ameda breast pump except the Nurture III, this is a milk collection system that includes a special silicone diaphragm filter. This filter works two ways protecting the pump motor from getting contaminants in it and protecting the breast milk bottle from receiving contaminants from the motor. This extra amount of protection is desired for premature or sick infants or any mother desiring extra caution in the cleanliness of the collection of her milk. The use of the Hygienikit does not negate Ameda's recommendation that all their pumps (except the hospital rental pumps) be single user, even though the Hygienikit IS the individual user kit for rental pumps.

LACTATION CONSULTANT
A highly specialized healthcare professional with advanced training in breastfeeding management. Because of the nature of their training, their advice on breastfeeding may be more specific and useful than what a mother will receive from her obstetrician or baby's pediatrician.

LACTATION AID
A device that consists of a container of usually infant formula or banked breast milk and a long but narrow-diameter tube. The tube is inserted into an infant's mouth along with the breast while nursing and provides extra nutrition to the infant while the breast simultaneously receives stimulation to encourage lactation. This also prevents a baby from becoming attached to artificial nipples while enabling a mother time to undertake strategies to shore up a lagging milk supply. Should be used under the advice of a lactation consultant as improper use could diminish milk supply.

LET-DOWN
Also known as the milk ejection response, it occurs when hormones cause muscles within the breast to squeeze and the ducts to widen, pushing the milk from all parts of the breast toward the nipple. Some mothers feel a tingling sensation; others feel nothing. Let-down is partly a conditioned response and can be encouraged while nursing or breast pumping by engaging in routines (i.e. sitting in the same place, drinking from a certain cup), looking at a picture of the baby, thinking of the milk flowing, or taking the mind off of everything about it.

LET-DOWN MASSAGE CUSHIONS
The Avent breast pump shields or flanges are soft silicone and have 5 petal-shaped bumps that move in and out to massage the areola and aid let-down. Available in only one size.

MILK COLLECTION BAGS
Marketed under different trade names, these plastic bags are intended for the collection and storage of breast milk. They bear a resemblance to disposable bottle liners but have the notable difference of being thicker and stronger. For this reason milk collection bags are more suited for freezing breast milk and for using with breast pumps that permit attaching bags in place of bottles. Attaching disposable bottle liners to a breast pump will not permit a sufficient suction to be created for the pump to function properly.

MMHG
Abbreviation for millimeters of mercury and as it relates to breast pumps it means strength of vacuum or suction. Sufficient pressure is needed to stimulate let-down, not to suction the milk from the breasts as is sometimes erroneously believed. Hospital grade breast pumps have the highest mmHg numbers and are the best for establishing a milk supply in mothers who need help in that area because of low supply issues or a hospitalized newborn. After a supply is well-established some users have found that "less is more" and adjusting the suction lower has enabled better let-down. Fortunately most electric pumps have adjustable vacuum strengths.

OPEN SYSTEM
A breast pump designed to be used by a single user. The undesirable possibility exists of breast milk entering the tubing and pump motor when the collection container is overfilled or tilted. See also SINGLE USER.

PARTS TO ASSEMBLE
As defined on the Breast Pump Comparison web pages at http://www.babylovesyourmilk.com/best-personal-electric-breast-pumps.htm , all the breast pump parts that must be assembled or disassembled at each pumping session not including motor, AC adaptor or battery pack, milk containers, lids, stands, extra breast shields, totes.

PARTS TO WASH
As defined on the Breast Pump Comparison web pages referenced above, all the breast pump parts that come in contact with the breast or milk, and therefore must be washed every time the user pumps, not counting the receptacle(s) for the milk and the lid(s).

MILK EJECTION RESPONSE (MER)
see LET-DOWN.

MULTIPLE USER
Hospital grade rental pumps are designed to be multiple user, and rental stations will require the non-refundable and non-returnable purchase of an individual accessory kit for the parts (shields, connectors, tubing) that actually comes in contact with the mother's breast or milk.

PISTON-TYPE MANUAL BREAST PUMP
The pumping action is created with a sliding piston and cylinder and requires the use of two hands.

RENTAL PUMPS
See MULTIPLE USER.

SINGLE BREAST PUMPING
Pumping only one breast at a time. Single pumping is useful for pumping one side while the baby nurses the other. For some mothers the ability to single pump enables them to soothe and hold their baby on one side while pumping the other.

SINGLE USER
Most breast pumps are personal use items intended to be used by one mother only to prevent the transmission of diseases like HIV and hepatitis.

SOFTFIT BREAST SHIELD
The soft, flexible breast shield that massages the breast and areola when breast pumping, manufactured and trademarked by Medela. Can be used with all Medela pumps but the Little Hearts manual breast pump.

STARS
Awarded to breast pumps by actual users on Amazon and Epinions on a five-star scale with five meaning the best. Reading these reviews may be helpful because they often explain specific difficulties with certain breast pumps.

TRIGGER-TYPE MANUAL BREAST PUMP
The pumping action is created with a squeeze handle similar to what one finds on a spray bottle. A one-handed breast pump.

VIA
Avent's sturdy disposable container system for the collection and storage of breast milk. It can be used with all of Avent's breast pumps and some other brands also. The disposable cup bases can be sterilized up to three times and are also suitable for freezing. Bottle nipples in a variety of flows are available to fit the system.

WARRANTY
The warranty for breast pumps should be paid attention to and sales receipts saved. Pumps that get frequent use may wear out before their warranties expire.

Breach of Contract and the Grounds for a Lawsuit

Breach of contract happens when people fail to perform their promised obligations and duty, which will also make them liable for a lawsuit.

Before signing a contract, it is very important to understand and read each provision to make sure that one can do all the terms and conditions stated in the agreement.  By doing this, people can know their legal rights and avoid possible lawsuit.

According to lawyers, US courts recognize a contract if the elements stated below are present:

1.    One party agrees to do certain duties in exchange of a promise.  For instance, a business consultant is hired by a corporation that requires him to serve his employers and not to reveal trade secrets to other companies.  In exchange for this condition, the corporation gives a promise that he will receive a high salary.

2.    The contract is fair.  The agreement between two people should give both of them fair and equal advantages.  Meanwhile, if the agreement will only provide benefits to one side, or when the conditions are unfair to the other party, a contract is considered void.

3.    Both parties have the capacity to make reasonable judgment while signing the contract.  For instance, when one party is intoxicated and enters into a contract, such agreement is void since he or she is not in a position to make reasonable judgment.

4.    No party is forced to sign the contract.  According to lawyers, when one side is forced to sign a contract because of physical threats and moral and emotional pressure, the agreement is void and there is no ground for breach contract.

5.    The contract is signed without undue influence.  For instance, a father forced his 19-year-old daughter to sign a contract who agreed because she feared that her parent will hurt her if she refused.  If this is the situation, the signed contract is not recognized by the court.

6.    Both parties did not commit any misrepresentation or false claim.  If one side gives false statement and lie to encourage the other party to agree with the contract, the agreement is considered void.  For example, an employer said or implied to his secretary that she will receive a certain amount of salary (to encourage her to work for him).  However, the secretary received less than what her employer promised, prompting her to quit on the job.  In this situation, her employer, who lied to her, cannot file a breach of contract.

7.    Both parties are not illiterate.  When someone who is illiterate is forced to sign a contract, the court will consider the agreement void since the person is not in a position to understand and decide for himself/herself.
